What is Living Donor liver transplant
Living Donor liver transplant (LDLT) is an extremely complex surgery which involves removal of a portion of the liver from a living person and implanting it into the recipient’s body. This transplant is governed by The Human Organ Transplant Act (1994) of the Indian Government. As per this act, anybody who is suffering from severe liver damage and requires a new liver can receive a portion of the liver from his/her relatives after approval from the ethical committee. The ethical committee checks for the legitimacy and verifies the relationship in such cases before giving a clearance for the same. How is the transplantation done? Once a suitable match has been found and approval has been granted by the ethical committee, one can proceed for the liver transplant surgery. During LDLT surgery, both the patient and the donor are operated simultaneously and the operation takes about 10-12 hours. First, a portion of the liver (liver graft) is removed from the donor, which takes about 6-8 hours. The diseased liver from the patient is then replaced with this grafted portion of the healthy liver, which takes about 4-6 hours.
Recovery Time Post surgery, the donor supposedly recovers within a week and is ready to be discharged within 7-10 days. However, the patient is only brought to consciousness the following day depending on his condition. It can take upto 3-4 weeks before he is ready to be discharged from the hospital.
